With no financial support or a proper place to live, without the guarantee of three time food, they have to start working at a very early age, when they should have been in some school. Those who are not working or begging for living are left for the day by their parents in the street to fend for themselves. Their parents too dont have an option other than these. Sending to school to receive the primary education is adopted by few parents, but most of them ignore this and put their kids to work some where. Life has not allowed these children to have a choice to choose the way of education. But does that mean those of us who have given the opportunity to help someone turn a blind eye on this problem saying that its not our headache to provide for others who are less fortunate than us. Its the work of the state administration. After all we dream of making this world a better place to live. So, start lending help in achieving that target.

To start with, it would be better if we start concentrating towards providing free education to those who cannot afford it. Setting up education societies would be a very good idea where poor children will be provided with free education and other facilities like medical facilities, sports kits, stationery and clothing kits for free which lead to an all round development of the children.

In the March 17, 2009 issue of Life Extension Update, we reported the finding from the Sister Study, a cohort of healthy sisters of breast cancer patients, of a beneficial association between multivitamin use and telomere length, a biomarker of aging. Telomeres, which are repeating DNA sequences that cap the ends of chromosomes, shorten with increased cellular aging.

In articles published in the February and March, 2009 issues of the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, further findings from the Sister Study concerning the impact of lifestyle on telomere length were revealed.

In the February, 2009 issue, Christine Parks, PhD, of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and her associates evaluated the effect of stress on telomere length in 647 Sister Study participants. Telomere length in DNA from blood samples was measured, and stress hormone levels in urine were assessed. Questionnaires completed by the subjects provided information on perceived stress levels.

Study participants, on average, reported low stress levels. “Even so, women who reported above-average stress had somewhat shorter telomeres, but the difference in telomere length was most striking when we looked at the relationship between perceived stress and telomere length among women with the highest levels of stress hormones,” Dr Parks observed. “Among women with both higher perceived stress and elevated levels of the stress hormone epinephrine, the difference in telomere length was equivalent to or greater than the effects of being obese, smoking or 10 years of aging.”

In the report that appeared in the March, 2009 issue of the journal, the effect of past and current body mass index (BMI) on telomere length was examined. Sister Study participants whose BMI categorized them as overweight or obese before or during their thirties and whose weight status was maintained were found to have shorter telomeres compared to subjects who became overweight at an older age. “This suggests that duration of obesity may be more important than weight change per se, although other measures of overweight and obesity were also important,” stated lead author Sangmi Kim, PhD, also of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. “Our results support the hypothesis that obesity accelerates the aging process”.

“We anticipate a wealth of information to come out of the Sister Study,” predicted Dale Sandler, PhD, chief of the Epidemiology Branch at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and principal investigator of the Sister Study. “Not only do we hope to find out more about the environmental and genetic factors that might lead to breast cancer, we also want to learn more about how factors such as stress, diet and exercise might impact cancer and other disease risks.”

“Together these two studies reinforce the need to start a healthy lifestyle early and maintain it,” National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences director Linda Birnbaum, PhD, concluded. “These papers remind us that there are things people can do to modify their behavior and live healthier lives, such as maintain a healthy weight and cultivate healthy responses to stress.”

Madrid, Spain, May 30, 2013 – Jorge Gallardo won the prize for his proposal to reintegrate young victims of violence into society.

Spanish university professor Jorge Gallardo was the outright winner of the third GRADUATE XXI contest, an Inter-American Development Bank (BID) initiative designed to prevent children dropping out of school in Latin America. Gallardo, who has a doctorate in Communication Sciences and is a professor at the Camilo Jos Cela University (UCJC) in Madrid, won the award for his proposal for socially reintegrating young people who have suffered from violence.

His project, entitled -Good memories mark the start of a new path-, won the majority of users’ votes on the programme’s website. -My idea involves expressing negative and positive memories, and posting the positive ones on a blog where they can be shared with other education centres all over the world, because this is the wonderful thing about the Internet and its global reach-, said Gallardo.

The international body said that, although access to education in Latin America has improved considerably over recent years, almost half of all Latin American students do not finish secondary school. Gador Manzano, head of the GRADUATE XXI project, said that initiatives such as this one -give all sectors of society a voice and the chance to actively participate in efforts to combat the school dropout problem and make a good-quality education possible for all-.

The objective of GRADUATE XXI is to involve Latin American citizens in improving the educational system and to increase the numbers completing secondary school education in the region.

Study Later School Start Time Lowers Teen Crash Rate

The logic of it makes perfect sense: teens don’t function at high levels early in the morning. So the results of a study from the Eastern Virginia Medical school aren’t too shocking: when high schools start too early, teens are more likely to crash their cars on the way there.

The study compared teen accident rates between Virginia Beach and Chesapeake counties, two adjacent Virginia counties with differing school start times.

Robert Vorona, a sleep doctor at the school, compiled data on drivers between 16 and 18 in the two counties. In Virginia Beach, the high schools start at 7:20 a.m., and in Chesapeake, 8:40 a.m.

While the time difference was seemingly minimal, the crash data was drastically different.

Among students who started school very early in Virginia Beach, there were 65.4 car crashes for every 1,000 teen drivers. In Chesapeake County, there were just 46.2 crashes per 1,000 teen drivers.

That is a 40% crash rate increase for schools starting a little over an hour earlier.

While this particular study didn’t account for the time of day of the crashes, this is not the first time school start times have been linked to the crash rate.

A 2008 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine showed a 16% decrease in accidents when a Kentucky school pushed start times back.

Falling asleep at the wheel is obviously dangerous, but for a new driver, merely being tired can have just as poor an effect on their driving.

To anyone who has ever lived with a teenager, this need for sleep isnt news. The average teen needs 9.25 hours of sleep and typically cant fall asleep until 11, so its no wonder that later start times help.

Several lobbyist groups are already pressuring schools to adopt earlier start times. If you don’t have time to get involved, there are a few things you can do to ensure that your teens are getting enough sleep.

Try turning off cell phones, computers, etc an hour or two before your teen needs to go to sleep so they can start winding down.

Avoid too many caffeinated beveragesand avoid caffeine entirely after 4 p.m.

Consider going over your teens daily schedule with them. When alarms start to go off at 6 a.m., and extracurricular activities last until 6 or 7 p.m., it can be hard to find time to juggle homework and a social life. Learning time management strategies from a young age ensures they can make time for sleep well into their adult life as well.

If your teen still didnt get the necessary amount of sleep, dont let them bike or drive to school. They may hate you for it, but at least they wont be a hazard to themselves or others on the road.

When students ignore the importance of study skills because “we’re never going to use this in real life,” I tell them about the time I was programming a video game for fun. Early in college, I was working on a video game where a boulder would fly out of a stick figure’s hand when you hit the space bar (by boulder I mean large circle). The arrow keys pointed the stick figure’s arm in different directions (by arm I mean straight line). The problem was if you pressed any arrow key too long the arm would extend out forever. So I needed to enter in a formula that would tell the computer it was OK to spin the arm around and not OK for the arm to reach out into infinity.

I ended up using the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the problem. (Just in case you don’t remember, it’s the formula used to calculate the legs of a right triangle.) Then it hit me, “Crap, I actually used the Pythagorean Theorem in real life.”

Then another realization hit me, “Writing in ancient PASCAL programming language to make large circles appear out of a straight line on my monitor isn’t real life. It’s probably the furthest thing from it.” Which continues to beg the question, if you really are never going to use a lot of what you learn in school anywhere in your life, ever, why spend all that time with it? Most students spend years on the Pythagorean Theorem. How come? What’s the reason why?

Well, let’s compare all that time a student works with that theorem with lifting weights. When you lift weights, you end up developing your muscles. Though it’s not likely you’re going to have to use those exact weights daily to survive (unless you’re a trainer or physical therapist). In the same way, working with theorems help you develop mental muscles. Though it’s not likely you’re going to have to use those exact theorems daily to survive (unless you’re a math teacher). Instead of working with solid weights to build physical muscle, you are working with abstract ideas to build mental muscle. The classroom is the gym for your mind.

No doubt studying is work just like going to the gym is work. We need strong reasons why to continue doing the work. People who physically work out generally don’t want t be seen as unattractive, fat, and lazy. People who work on their study skills generally don’t want to be seen as stupid, incompetent, and lazy. They don’t want to be the dumbest person in a group. They don’t want to be taken advantage of. They don’t want to be broke. They want others to willingly listen to and follow them.
